History of the Department
The Department of Food Science (Bromatology) at the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Sarajevo was a separate sub-organizational unit from the very foundation of the Faculty in 1975. The first head of the Department was Prof. dr. Mario Levi. Prof. dr. Levi held this position until he died in 1990. During the war (1992–1995) and the immediate post-war period, due to the lack of teaching staff, the Faculty of Pharmacy underwent several reorganizations, mostly accompanied by the integration of available capacities. Thus, the subject of Bromatology together with the subjects of Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Drug Control, Toxicological Chemistry, and Introduction to Pharmacy was integrated into the Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry. The head of the department was Prof. dr. Miroslav Šober. The teaching of Bromatology was entrusted to Prof. dr. Ante Milanović, who held this position until 2009. From 2009 to 2013, the teacher-in-charge of the Bromatology course was Prof. dr. Faruk Čaklovica, who was also engaged in the 3rd cycle of studies at the Faculty of Pharmacy until 2018. In parallel, in 2013, a new reorganization led to the formation of the Department of Pharmaceutical Analytics, which included Bromatology, Drug Analytics and Toxicological Chemistry. Finally, in 2021, a separate Department of Food Science and Nutrition was formed, and Prof. dr. Jasmina Đeđibegović elected as head of department.

Teaching activities
The teaching at the Department of Food Science and Nutrition currently includes classes in the compulsory course in Food Science and the elective courses Functional Food and Dietetic Products, and Dietetics for students of integrated pharmacy studies. Two elective modules offered to doctoral students are Human Nutrition and Dietetics.
The Department also provides classes for specialists in the field of Bromatology (formerly called Sanitary Chemistry) and the field of Diet Therapy and Clinical Nutrition (formerly called Nutrition and Dietetics), which was introduced in 2010 as an exclusive specialization in healthcare for masters of pharmacy at the initiative of this Department.
In addition, the Department significantly contributed to development and implementation of several courses at other faculties of the University of Sarajevo. Prof. dr. Jasmina Đeđibegović developed the curriculum and taught the courses: Dietetics, Residues and Contaminants in Food, Food Additives (interdisciplinary master's study program, Center for Interdisciplinary Studies of the University of Sarajevo). Prof.dr Đeđibegović is also the teacher-in-charge for the courses Specially Formulated Food Products, Antioxidants in Nutrition, and the Health Significance of Functional Food at the 1st cycle of studies Health Nutrition and Dietetics, University of Sarajevo – Faculty of Health Studies.
Academic and professional activities
The research at the Department of Food Science and Nutrition has been mainly related to food safety and the nutritional value of food ever since its establishment. Bachelor, master, and doctoral theses, specialist theses, and other research projects led by teaching staff at the Department analyzed the occurrence in food and dietary exposure to microbiological and chemical agents, as well as dietary intake of nutrients and non-nutritive bioactive components, and the resulting health effects thereof. Besides, teaching staff participated in three international projects examining the content of persistent organic pollutants in food and the environment, and strengthening capacity for the Stockholm Convention implementation in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The Department is also vigorously developing and stimulating students' research by actively participating in eight Food-Nutrition-Health student congresses held so far.
Prof. dr. Jasmina Đeđibegović contributed to the development of the profession and pharmaceutical activity in Bosnia and Herzegovina through active participation in the work of the Committee for Continuing Education, and subsequently as the president of the Committee for Professional Affairs of the Chamber of Masters of Pharmacy FBiH. She was a member of the Scientific Committee of 13 symposia and two congresses organized by the Chamber during 2013–2020.
